Market Fresh

Chapter 1

Chapter 1 by ErosApostasia ErosApostasia

Late evening settles over Market Fresh Grocery. Twenty minutes until closing. I walk in, and the first thing I notice is her.

She stands behind the customer service desk under harsh fluorescent lights, her ice-cold eyes locking onto me the moment I cross the threshold. Her aggressiveness radiates like heat—she's auditing inventory on a clipboard, and my arrival is clearly an insult to her evening. She taps her pen sharply against the metal board, the sound cutting through the quiet hum of the refrigerators.

"We close in eighteen minutes," she says, her voice clipped and final. "That means you have five minutes to grab what you need before my cashiers shut down. Don't wander around like a lost toddler, and don't try to make conversation. What do you want, or are you just here to waste my time?"

I lean against the counter, letting my gaze travel over her—the sharp line of her jaw, the way her shoulders carry tension like armor. She's older than me, maybe twenty years, but there's something about that authority in her posture that makes my pulse quicken.

"And what do you do to lost toddlers who can't find their way out?" I ask, my voice pitched low and playful. "Does mommy take them to the back and spank their bottoms?"

Her grip tightens on the clipboard until her knuckles turn white. A sneer curls her lip, making her look more predatory than maternal.

"Is that your best attempt at being clever?" she says, stepping around the counter with a sharp, intimidating stride despite her height. "How utterly pathetic. I don't play games, and I certainly don't indulge the delusions of men who think they can use cheap, childish theatrics to get a rise out of me. I deal with disruptions exactly how they deserve: with total indifference. Now, either put something in your basket or get out of my sight before I call security to escort you to the curb where you belong."

I grab a few items—just enough to make this look legitimate—and head toward the s. My mind is already working the angle, the words forming before I even reach the checkout.

"Well, darn," I say as I set my groceries on the counter. "We could have had fun."

I pay quickly, deliberately, watching her face harden with each second that es. When I turn to leave, I slip a piece of paper with my number across the counter toward her.

"Call me," I say, holding her gaze. "Miss... if your hand is itching to spank someone tonight. I was only partly joking. I'd let you if you wanted to."

I wink and turn toward the door, but I'm not quite ready to leave it at that.

A dry, humorless laugh escapes her throat—more a cough of disgust than anything genuine. She watches me with the same scrutiny one might afford a cockroach scuttling toward a drain.

"Fun?" she calls out, her voice cutting through the air like a blade. "You think this is some tawdry little comedy for your amusement? Your desperation is practically leaking off you. It's revolting."

I pause at the door, my hand on the frame.

"Fine," I call back over my shoulder. "I'll spank you then, if that's what you want. Keep the number. Call if you get an itchy palm. Or an itchy bottom. I'm not picky about who gets spanked."

She stops dead in her tracks. The clipboard slams onto the counter with a deafening crack. Her face contorts into a mask of pure, icy disdain, and for a moment, the air in the grocery store feels thick with her contempt.

"Are you truly this desperate, or does it come naturally to you?" she says, circling the counter with movements precise and deliberate. "Even a sack of potatoes would have more self-respect. I don't need your attention, your pity, or your nonsense. You think you're clever? You're just another waste of oxygen trying to play games with someone who sees through every move before you make it. Try once more to cross the line, and I'll see to it you never darken these aisles again."

She tosses the clipboard down with finality and steps aside, gesturing sharply toward the door.

"Now, go. Shoo."

I leave, laughing, my number still on the slip of paper sitting on her counter. As I the automatic doors, I wiggle my bottom at her in an exaggerated goose step, unable to resist one final taunt.

She stares at the piece of paper left on the counter as if it were a biohazard. Her jaw remains set, a vein pulsing rhythmically in her temple. She doesn't even bother to watch me leave. Instead, she picks up the slip with two fingers, her expression one of profound loathing.

"Absurd," she mutters to herself, her voice dripping with venom.

Without hesitation, she crumples the paper into a tight ball and hurls it directly into the trash bin behind the . She turns her back to the entrance, grabbing a spray bottle of disinfectant and a rag. She begins scrubbing the counter where I stood, her movements violent and aggressive—as if she could physically erase the memory of my presence from the floorboards.

"Disgusting," she snaps at the air, her voice low but edged with something dangerously close to fury.
